Course Overview
The objectives of this course are to gain an understanding of safe working practices with regard to seamanship, cargo work, pilot ladders and means of access, shipboard organization and associated topics. Assessment will be made in the form of direct observation and oral questioning.
Important Course Information:
In order to comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy Courses must provide a Seaman’s Discharge Book, Passport or Driving Licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of Certificates.
Validity of certificate:
There is no expiry date on this certificate.
Medical Declaration:
Attention is drawn to the fact that parts of the course are of a physical nature. You will be required to complete a medical declaration when you attend your course.
Entry Requirements
The requirements for EDH have been amended to allow a more flexible approach for the yacht, workboat and fishing industry. The following certification and experience will permit entry on to an EDH course and examination:
- MCA accepted Yachtmaster Offshore certificate and shorebased course;
- Yacht Rating with at least 6 months sea service and a steering certificate or NWR certificate;
- Fishing Class 2 CoC or the Seafish 5 day watchkeeping course for under 16.5m fishing certificates;
- BML Tier 1, level 2 certificate; or
- Tug rating with at least 6 months sea time (which may be in categorised water) and a steering certificate or NWR certificate.
- Be at least 17 years old.
Note: before an EDH certificate can be issued, a minimum of 6 months sea service in vessels of more than 15m is required. Sea service in category C and D waters will be accepted at full rate.
Modules and Assessment
The EDH course consists of 4 days of tuition followed by a fifth day of practical and theory assessment. The examination subject areas consist of:-
- Use of common nautical terms
- Provision of LSA and Fire Fighting equipment
- Working knowledge of common seamanship techniques including bends, hitches and splices.
- Good working knowledge of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen published by MCA.
