This five-day course is for seafarers designated to take charge of medical care on board ship and for those requiring certificates of competency.
The course is a mixture of classroom theory sessions and practical exercises with self-study for preparation for the next day.
You must be conversant with current first aid practices before taking this course. For those who have not had recent first aid training, we recommend undertaking some additional personal study to achieve this standard.
What you'll learn
On completion you will have knowledge of medical stores and equipment on board to be able to:
- understand how to participate in the coordinated provision of medical care to a person on board,
- assess and provide care to an ill person on board, and
- assess and provide care to an injured casualty on board.
Officers applying for a chief mate/master CoC for the first time must hold a Proficiency in Medical Care certificate not older than five years. This course can be undertaken to update an existing Proficiency in Medical Care certificate.
Prerequisites
- You must hold either a Proficiency in Medical First Aid certificate or a Proficiency in Medical Care certificate, or its update.
- You must be over the age of 16.
You must be able to provide documentary evidence of meeting these prerequisites.
