Position Title: Entertainment Technician – Automation

Overview:

The Automation Technician operates and maintains the automated stage rigging system in the main theater for various shows and activities. This includes everything from full-cast productions and magic shows to variety performances, game shows, and more. The role requires technical expertise in automation, rigging, and maintenance of equipment, as well as a strong ability to work under pressure and meet performance needs.
Key Responsibilities:

  1. Show Operations:
    • Perform show load-ins and load-outs for each production.
    • Conduct pre-show checks, including power cycling control cabinets and verifying calibration and position of automated units.
    • Run cue-by-cue sequences and perform dry-runs of shows with automated systems.
    • Safely operate automated rigging systems during shows, following cue sheets and safety procedures.
  2. Maintenance and Cleaning:
    • Perform cleaning and basic maintenance of the stage rigging system, including cleaning drops, LED screens, and inspecting aircraft cables.
    • Assist with the maintenance and repair of scenery, props, and stage floor vinyl.
    • Ensure the proper calibration of systems such as the orchestra lift/turntable and encoder couplings.
  3. Technical Support:
    • Operate automated equipment safely during performances and other scheduled events.
    • Report any faults or malfunctions affecting safety, cast, crew, guests, or the ship itself to the Entertainment Technical Manager.
    • Respond to work calls and assist with general theater cleaning and repairs.
    • Support rehearsals, technical runs, and assist with setups for special events or cast changes.
  4. Guest Interaction:
    • Occasionally assist with front-of-house tasks and interact with guests during certain events or troubleshooting scenarios, aiming to exceed guest expectations.
  5. Technical and Safety Compliance:
    • Operate safely at heights and handle equipment like electric hoists and AWP (Aerial Work Platform).
    • Ensure all technical systems are secure and meet the necessary safety standards.
    • Attend required safety and training sessions, including emergency drills and safety inspections.
  6. General Duties:
    • Take part in the “Tech On Duty” rotation, providing support for audio, video, and lighting setups for various events and functions across the ship.
    • Be available to assist with technical troubleshooting during events, including setting up equipment for presentations and performances.
    • Help with additional technical requirements for chartered groups, events, and technical rehearsals.

Job Requirements:

  • Education/Experience:
    • Associate Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or at least one year of equivalent work experience.
    • Background in theater, familiar with industry standards and regulations.
    • Basic knowledge of PC hardware/software maintenance and rigging systems.
  • Skills & Qualifications:
    • Ability to work under pressure and multitask in fast-paced environments.
    • Comfortable working at heights (up to 35ft) and handling stage equipment.
    • Excellent verbal communication skills in English (ability to communicate over headsets and in noisy environments).
    • Physically fit, able to lift/move up to 50 pounds and safely climb ladders.
    • Must be willing to work 7 days a week, up to 10 hours per day, for 6-8 month contracts with occasional time off.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must comply with shipboard rules and regulations, including safety drills, uniform standards, and hygiene protocols.
    • Must be willing to learn and stay current with entertainment technology.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports directly to the Entertainment Technical Manager.
  • Additional supervision from the Entertainment Director, Ship’s Command, and Shoreside Supervisors.

Performance Assessments:

  • Evaluated after a 90-day probation period, with subsequent assessments throughout the contract. Regular performance reviews will determine eligibility for continued employment and advancement opportunities.

Working Conditions:

  • Required to work on a contract basis for 6-8 months, with up to 2 months of unpaid leave in between contracts.
